hi. i would like to talk a little bit with you about my home aquarium. i have a 36 gallon bow front tank and it is a saltwater tank. I would like to know some things to make it a better tank in general. I bought it as a starter kit and just made it into saltwater therefore it has a hang on filter and a heater. i currently have three fish and one snowflake eel. I’ve had other fish but they have either died or have been eaten, but my main concerns are how keep it nice and clean. My sand is a little dirty i think and i have algae growing on everything and would like to know to take care of that as well. i have some snails in my tank to try to keep everything kind of clean. i have reduced the time on how long the light is on and it seemed to help. i don’t have any fancy lighting either just the one that came with it. I always wondered about protein skimmers and other things i see on websites but don’t know if i should get some or not. could you help me out on some basics i guess to what i should have. another thing is some pointers on doing water changes. thank you for your time and i hope to hear back from you.

I would need a little bit more information on your aquarium before I could answer your question. What type of filter do you have? Most freshwater aquarium starter kits do not transition well into saltwater aquariums. Saltwater filtration i.e. Protein skimmers, wet dry filters, U.V. sterilizers, chemical reactors etc. are designed to solve some of the problems you are experiencing. Excess algae, yellow water, unexplained fish loss can usually be solved by adding the proper filtration. Regular water changes and how long your lights are on will affect aquarium appearance and the health of your fish. Please give us a call or visit us so we can discuss your problems further. 6. You have to express more your opinion to attract more readers, because just a video or plain text without any personal approach is not that valuable. But it is just form my point of view

I have noticed many people making comments and I think that is great, but we would also like some people to post topics that others might find interesting or useful. For example anyone who has pictures of their tank they would like to show off. If anyone has questions about fish, tanks, aquarium maintenance, feeding or corals feel free to post that as well. We would like you to post what ever interests you. We also have a forum that you could use to post comments or questions in.

Hello. I am looking to put some live plants in my aquarium. I currently got a 20 gallon tank with a triple filter system and a ‘bubble machine’. The tank also has lighting that came with the tank. I’ve got some cat-fish for the algae and mix of other fishes like tetras and the like. Do have any advice as how to choose the plants or can I take and just trim the roots and stick em’ in? Thank you,
    Dan

  13. uwdepot says:

You can do a nice plant tank in a 20 gallon, but you will have to make some changes to your current set-up to make it successful. The lighting that came with the tank in no way will be adequate. Live plants require a lot of light and to make the plants thrive it is recommended that you have at least 3-4 watts per gallon. If you were to upgrade to a 2 bulb T-5 lighting system this should be adequate for most live plants on your size tank. You would also need to invest in a plant substrate like Flourite, or some sort of clay based plant substrate. I am not sure what you mean by bubble machine but if it is a C02 system that is what you also need. With the right combination of C02 and lighting you can do most plants. If you want a thick ground cover of foreground plants you will need even more light. A good tip to remember with live plants is that larger leaf plants are usually stronger. Good starter plants are plants with larger leaves. If you go to most local fish stores they should have a Freshwater aquatic plant section and should have a variety of aquatic plants that you can buy and just plant in your aquarium. You should not have to cut or trim the roots. If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask or come visit us we have a large selection of Freshwater live plants for you to choose from.
